Now, let’s talk putty. It’s a fantastic alternative to wax, especially when you have just one chance to get it right and need something durable and robust. We can make multiple impressions from each putty mold, ensuring your unique design can be replicated. This is ideal when multiple people want to share that one special impression made into a bespoke piece of Coveted jewellery.
Putty impressions are also excellent for the very young, the very old, and delicate pet noses due to its super soft and malleable nature.
Let’s get started and make something amazing together
This putty is malleable and impressionable for about 2-5 minutes before it begins to cure (to completely hard after about 30 minutes) so please make sure you have everything ready to go prior to mixing your putty.
Take equal parts of the white (Part A) and blue (Part B) putty and knead them together until they form an even light blue colour. Use a pea-sized amount of each part, as they will combine to form a larger bean-sized putty. Using small amounts allows you to create more than one putty impression.
We recommend only mixing two peas at a time so that you have the full 5 minutes to spend with each bean sized putty.
Once mixed, place the smooth, bean-sized putty onto the included paper. Using an even downward motion press your finger, or the object you are making an impression of down onto the putty and then gently remove your finger or the object. The putty remains malleable for about 5 minutes, allowing you to perfect your impression before it becomes tacky.
If you are making a pet impression or an impression of a newborn or elderly person you can lie the backing paper on the lid of the tin and use the lid of the tin as a flat back for the impression.
If you are impressing an object and it gets stuck in the putty, wait for the putty to harden before removing it by peeling the putty away from the object.
If you aren’t happy with your impression you can quickly roll it into a ball and try again numerous times (within 5 minutes) until you notice the putty begins to feel tacky. This is the beginning of the putty curing and going hard.
Once you’re happy with the impressions leave the putty in a safe place to air dry for approximately 30mins until it hardens completely.
Once your impressions have hardened, pop your putty into the tin and into the return envelope provided.
Be sure to label your putty if you have a favourite or if you want an initial stamped on the back. Otherwise we will choose the best one. It is always good to return more than one impression – just as a backup.
Please send us a note about your impressions. We love to better understand the meaning behind each piece we make.
As soon as we receive your putty impression we use jewellers wax to make your impression ready for the casting process followed by the hand finishing process. Your completed bespoke impression piece should be back with you within about 4-6 weeks.
All of our pieces are fully customisable so please get in touch via hello@coveted.nz if you want to discuss any changes or additions to your piece before it is cast.
Don’t forget to share your #covetedimpressions with us, and the story behind your necklace by returning the enclosed postcard and/or tagging @coveted.nz in your posts. We love learning about the moments, memories or muse that inspires each impression.

Yes you can! We can lightly hand stamp a San-serif initial in to the back of the pendant without affecting the impression on the other side. It may be off centre if your wax is thin in the middle. Just make sure each of your waxes are clearly labelled when you return them us for casting and we will take care of the rest.
If your object gets stuck, wait until the putty goes completely hard before attempting to remove it. This ensures that the impression remains intact. You can also send us your object and we can make an impression for you if that helps.

We regularly create pendants with fully formed fingerprints with 2 and 3 year olds. It is possible to try with children younger than 2 but we cannot guarantee the outcome if their fingerprints are not fully formed yet. For the very young it is ofter the tiny size of their finger divot that makes the piece so adorable as their fingertips don’t stay tiny for long.
Since our hands all age differently you but only try. Explore taking impressions from different parts of the hand. We have had some lovely impressions taken from hand creases and knuckles in the past.

Before returning the wax impression, make sure you’re happy with it’s appearance since the final product will be an exact replica of it. If you can see a fingerprint and like the shape of the wax, then it’s fine to proceed. It can help to look at the wax through the zoomed in lense of your phone camera to check for details in the wax. Those details will look great and be highlighted in polished silver or gold. Remember that the wax always looks underwhelming compared to the finished piece. Trust the process.
Yes with any impression you can make a double sided or multi sided impression. The best way to make a double sided impression is to press the warm wax between your fingertips in mid air. Or you could press two finger tips down on top of a finger for a triple sided impression.

Yes. Get in touch to let us know so we can arrange to create a master-pattern from the wax that you have chosen. To do this we make a silicone mould from your selected wax impression and from this mould we can cast as many impression pendants as you wish. You can select to have this silicone mould (master-pattern) when you purchase the impression kit.
Yes, get in contact for prices on individual pendants. We have carefully selected our chains for their strength and style. They are designed to be worn for years and years while keeping your solid impression pendant safe. We recommend getting your existing chain links checked for general wear and tear by a jeweller before trusting it to keep your new impression pendant safe.
Please get in touch for a quote if you wish to make a custom size impression. Our impression sizes are calibrated so that once cast they will weigh a specific amount in Silver or Gold which is about 10x heavier in metal per gram than it is in wax.
The waxes are designed to capture a detailed snap shot of a section of your muse rather than the entire area of texture. Consider pressing the wax onto the centre of one of the toe pads rather than trying to press it across the entire paw.
Yes we can digitise the ink print and laser engrave it onto one of our blank impression pendants for you. Just send us a good quality image (or high resolution scan) of your father’s print and we can go from there.
